As well, here is a great article written by Dr. Chad Stone for Livestrong.com on the basics of probiotics...
"Probiotic microorganisms -- or so-called beneficial bacteria -- are found in foods such as yogurt and fermented soy products. They can also be found in health food stores in specific probiotic drinks or sold in capsule form as dietary supplements. There is growing scientific evidence that probiotics benefit some aspects of human health.
What Are Probiotics?
Probiotics are living microorganisms -- bacteria and yeast -- that are found in foods such as yogurt as well as specific probiotic supplements. USProbiotics.org and the Mayo Clinic explain that when administered in adequate amounts, probiotics are thought to have a positive effect on health by protecting the body from harmful bacteria. The most commonly used probiotics are bacteria that are similar to bacteria that are naturally found in the gut. These bacteria are typically of the Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium species.
When ingested, probiotics colonize the gut and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria that the digestive system may encounter on a daily basis. They also aid digestion, particularly the digestion of dairy products. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine explains that probiotics are also used to treat gaseousness, bloating, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disturbances. Probiotics may also offer some relief from irritable bowel syndrome. Many probiotics are marketed as having a positive effect on the immune system; however, these claims are controversial according to an October 2010 report in The Guardian.
Safety of Probiotics
Probiotics are generally well-tolerated and very safe to use. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, common side effects of probiotic supplementation are diarrhea and upset stomach that occur as the gut and digestive system adjust to a new balance of microorganisms."
